About symptone
Welcome to Symptone, where we are on a mission to revolutionize the way medical conditions are understood and diagnosed on darker skin tones.
Symptone, a name derived from “symptom” and “tone,” embodies our mission to revolutionize the perception of diseases and infections. By focusing on symptoms, we aim to raise awareness and urgency in recognizing and addressing these health indicators. The word, “tone” signifies not only the mission of our project but also the diverse colors and shades of individuals’ skin, highlighting our commitment to addressing healthcare disparities affecting people of color.
Our founder, Heritza, knows firsthand the challenges of navigating a healthcare system that often lacks representation and understanding of diverse skin tones. Her journey began innocuously as a bright and driven high school senior, but a nagging ache in her coccyx escalated into a relentless torment that disrupted her daily life and aspirations.
After enduring months of suffering and undergoing multiple invasive procedures, Heritza emerged with a profound sense of purpose. She founded Symptone to ensure that individuals with darker skin tones never face the same barriers she did.
At Symptone, we are committed to creating a comprehensive visual database that normalizes and familiarizes the medical community with the presentation of various conditions on darker skin tones. Our goal is to eliminate the delays and preventions in timely care that many face due to the lack of representation in medical literature and resources.
With each image captured and each condition documented, we are one step closer to a future where medical textbooks and resources embrace inclusivity. We envision a world where every individual, regardless of skin tone, sees themselves reflected in the annals of medical knowledge.
